KARAJ

IRAN
Go Back

I live in Karaj, a city tucked against the foothills of the Alborz Mountains, just west of Tehran. Many call it the “gateway to the north,” where the busy highways begin their climb toward the Caspian Sea. The Karaj River cuts through the valley, and the great Amir Kabir Dam rises in the mountains nearby, supplying water and power to millions. What was once a quiet agricultural town has grown into one of Iran’s largest cities, filled with students, factory workers, and families who moved here seeking opportunity outside the crowded capital.

Karaj is a city of newcomers. People from every corner of Iran have settled here — Persians, Azeris, Kurds, and others — bringing their hopes and struggles with them. Apartment towers stretch across the valley, and the city hums with the energy of commuters traveling daily to Tehran. Yet beneath the movement is a quiet heaviness. Economic hardship, rising costs, and uncertainty about the future weigh on many families.

In recent years, Karaj has also become one of the places where public frustration has surfaced. Demonstrations have broken out in neighborhoods and universities as young people and workers speak out about economic pressure and political control. Security forces often respond quickly, and conversations about these events happen cautiously, behind closed doors.

The tensions of the current war have only added to the uncertainty. With Tehran so close, people in Karaj feel the ripple effects of military activity, sanctions, and instability. Yet life continues — vendors open their shops in the morning, students fill the campuses, and families gather along the river parks in the evening hoping for a more peaceful future.

For followers of Jesus in Karaj, faith often grows quietly in homes and small gatherings. Believers pray for their neighbors, encourage one another, and trust that God is at work even in a city shaped by pressure and change. I believe Karaj — a city built by people searching for a better life — may also become a place where many discover a deeper hope in Christ.
